Scoring Points

Touchdown         6 points

A player has possession of the football in the opponent's end zone.

NOTE:  Once a player crosses the goal line, the play is over and his team is awarded 6 points.  If the player fumbles the football after crossing the goal line, his team is still awarded 6 points since the play ended as soon as the player crossed the goal line.

Extra Point(S)     1-2 points

Following a touchdown, the football is placed on the three yard line.  The offensive team can attempt to score 1 point by successfully kicking the ball through the goal posts or score 2 points by running or passing the ball past the goal line.

NOTE:  In high school, the play is whistled dead after a change of possession.  Therefore, the defensive team may not advance the ball after recovering a fumble, intercepting a pass, or blocking a P.A.T. (Point After Touchdown) kick.

Field Goal            3 points

The football is successfully kicked through the goal posts.  The offensive team may attempt a field goal at any time during the game, however this will normally occur on fourth down or immediately following the end of the first half, end of the game, or during overtime.

NOTE:  3 points are not awarded for an extra point attempt (1 pt) or punting the ball through the goal posts (0 pts).

SAFETY                2 points

An offensive team has possession of the ball in its own end zone when a player is tackled, steps out of bounds, fumbles out of bounds, or when certain penalties occur.

NOTE:  This can also occur when a team receiving a kickoff, punt, or failed field goal attempt runs into their own end zone with the football and are unable to successfully bring the ball back out of the end zone.

TOUCHBACK        0 points

The football is downed in the end zone or goes out of bounds without being carried into the end zone by a member of the receiving team.  This most often occurs when one team punts the ball into the end zone and the receiving team does not touch it.
