Placer
High School's amazing postseason resurrection
continued Friday night at Dixon High School.
The
Hillmen held off a valiant second-half Rams
rally for a 24-21 win that puts them into next
weekend's Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV
championship game against Pioneer Valley League
rival Whitney.
The day,
time and location of the title game will be
announced this morning by the section office.
"I could
not be more proud of a group of kids than I am
right now," Placer coach Joey Montoya said amid
a huge throng of Hillmen supporters who stormed
Dixon's field. "You saw the epitome of our
character tonight."
Placer
(8-4), which got into the playoffs through a
court order overturning a section forfeiture
ruling, looked as if it was going to roll to an
easy win over the Capital Valley Conference
champions in the first half.
Jake Lopez
helped stake the Hillmen to a 24-7 halftime lead
with a 59-yard touchdown run and a 39-yard
interception return. Asher Gotzmer also scored
on a 33-yard touchdown pass from quarterback
Matt Ross, and Cameron Southward had a 36-yard
field goal.
All those
points came after Dixon (9-3) had scored on a
10-play, 58-yard opening drive that was capped
by Jeffrey Anderson's 4-yard touchdown pass to
Daniel Williams.
But the
Hillmen struggled against Dixon's swarming
defense in the second half. A bad punt snap,
setting up the Rams' second touchdown, and a
fumble, hurt even more.
Dixon
closed to within three points with 1:41 left to
play in the fourth quarter when Anderson hit
Robbie Coates with a 16-yard touchdown pass.
But
Gotzmer recovered the onside kick, and the
Hillmen ran out the clock.
"Give
Dixon some credit," Montoya said. "They made
some great second-half adjustments. At the same
time, it was our poise that kept us in this
game."
Lopez
finished with 117 yards and a touchdown on 11
carries, and Gotzmer added 96 yards and a
touchdown on nine carries for Placer. Anderson
completed 17 of 31 passes for 189 yards and two
touchdowns and two interceptions for Dixon.

DIXON
— The Placer Hillmen will
play for their first
Sac-Joaquin Section title in
27 years.
Jake Lopez had a 58-yard
touchdown run and a 37-yard
interception return for
another score as Placer held
off Dixon 24-21 in the
Division IV semifinals
Friday night.
In
their second playoff win
since 2000, the Hillmen
advanced to the section
championship for the first
time since 1981, when they
downed Mira Loma 30-7 to win
the Division II title.
Placer will face Whitney in
the title tilt, which beat
Sierra of Manteca 51-28
Friday night.
Head coach Joey Montoya
expects to learn the
location and date of the
championship game Saturday.
The
Rams (9-3), Capital Valley
Conference champions, had
won seven straight,
including a 28-14
dispatching of Bear River in
the first round.
Cameron Southward kicked a
36-yard field goal with 2:14
left in the first quarter,
igniting a 24-point
offensive spurt over the
next eight minutes.
Quarterback Matt Ross threw
a 33-yard touchdown pass to
Asher Gotzmer with 1:54 left
in the second quarter,
extending Placer’s halftime
lead to 24-7.
The
Hillmen (8-4) improved to
15-5 all-time in the section
playoffs and will battle for
the school’s sixth football
pennant next week.

Scott Winslow knows which of his
players have made the All-Capital
Valley Conference football team.
But the Dixon High School coach
hasn't told them yet, and he
wouldn't tell this reporter, either.
"I actually like that we are a
fly-under-the-radar team," Winslow
said. "If we start talking about
individual awards, then the whole
team concept breaks down."
This has been a breakthrough season
for the Rams - they play host to
Placer in Friday's Sac-Joaquin
Section Division IV semifinal - and
Winslow says its largely because his
players have bought into the
"system."
"We have no stars, but we're blessed
with a lot of good athletes,"
Winslow said.
Dixon hasn't been to the playoffs
since 1999 and hasn't been in a
section final since 1974, so these
are big doings around the campus.
Winslow remembers different times.
In three previous seasons, the Rams
had losing records and weren't a
factor in the Capital Valley
Conference.
"We had some real low points,"
Winslow said. "Players were
literally teased by their
classmates. They'd hear on the radio
that they were in the bottom 10 in
the Sacramento Valley."
But Winslow sensed a change was
coming last season when a dedicated
group of then juniors and sophomores
maintained their resolve through a
3-7 campaign.
This year he has 44 players, two
years after a highly publicized
hazing incident left him with 19.
It didn't hurt that Dixon students
are now in the second year on a new
campus, thanks to a bond measure
approved by the community. The new
football stadium was utilized for
the first time this season.
"I think everyone feels like we've
got a fresh start," Winslow said.
"The whole community is getting
involved. There is a lot of
excitement and a lot of energy."

Star power ... as far as Scott Winslow
is concerned, who needs it?
Don't get Winslow
wrong. He would love to have another
Dave Ball. Instead, Dixon High School's
head football coach has a bunch of solid
athletes who take turns playing star for
a night.
"I think it's kind
of cool," Winslow admitted. "If you're
the other team, you don't look at our
stats and say, 'This is the guy we have
to stop.' We've got five or six guys who
can hurt you."
This week, the
"other team" is Placer. At stake is a
berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section
Division IV championship game.
Kickoff in the
semifinal matchup is set for Friday
night at 7:30 p.m. at Dixon.
"Obviously, it's a
dream come true for most of these
players," Winslow said. "It's certainly
not usual for us to be playing football
in December. But I think we'll be
ready."
The Rams (9-2)
will have to stop a Placer team that has
scored 35 points per game. The Hillmen
(7-4) have gained 2,506 yards on the
ground, and another 1,435 through the
air.
That kind of
balance requires a balanced defensive
attack. Jason Harvey (120 tackles) and
Austin Alvarado (94) are the leaders,
but Winslow also relies on the play of
defensive ends Casey Myers and Austin
Knapp.
Willie Soares is
an undersized defensive tackle who plays
much bigger than his 5-foot-5, 165-pound
dimensions.
Linebackers
Michael Hendrix and Sam Welch also have
been hits, so to speak. Defensive backs
Jesse Stewart, Josh Chamblee and Rhiley
Norton have combined for 10
interceptions.
Combined with
others, the group has allowed just 10
points per game.
On offense,
quarterback Jeffrey Anderson has thrown
for 1,053 yards. His 11 scoring passes
have gone to seven different receivers.
Hendrix leads the
ground game with 542 yards. But Mike
Mercado (349 yards), Josh Byington (329)
and Harvey (322) also get plenty of
carries, and LaRoy Jones leads the team
with five rushing touchdowns.
All told, nine
Rams have at least two rushing scores
each.
Part of the
success can be traced to the fact that
Dixon has 44 varsity players in uniform.
"It's definitely
the most since I've been here," Winslow
said.
There also is
talent, borne at least in part out of
adversity. Many of the players were part
of last year's
3-7 team.
"The kids showed
character ... they did not quit,"
Winslow said. "We thought this year was
going to be better, but you don't really
know until someone goes out and proves
it."

JUDGE ALLOWS PLACER H.S. TO COMPETE IN
FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS
(posted 11-24-08)
An Alameda County Superior Court judge today
ruled against the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section (CIFSJS),
saying that the
Section improperly determined a Placer High School football player was
ineligible.
The court decision reverses the Section’s earlier determination that
Placer High School must forfeit some of its football games
this season
because it played the ineligible player. The Section maintains its
bylaws comply with state law.
Today’s outcome paves the way for Placer High
School to participate – instead of Colfax H.S.
– in a playoff game
this Friday (Nov. 28) against
Oakdale High School. A judge last Friday postponed the Colfax-Oakdale
game
scheduled pending the outcome of today’s court hearing.
“While we strongly disagree with the decision, we respect the judge’s
ruling and will move forward in accordance with it,”
said CIFSJS
Commissioner Pete Saco. “Longer term, we will be exploring our options,
but for now we look forward to resuming
and completing our Section
football playoffs without any further distraction.”
The Section today also released the following new Division IV playoff
schedule,
which was revised because of last week’s court-ordered delay:
Placer will play at Oakdale this Friday night (Nov. 28) at 7:30 p.m.;
The semi-final round of playoffs will take place Friday, Dec. 5 at 7:30
p.m. with the following games:
Placer/Oakdale at Dixon
Sierra at Whitney
The championship game will be Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at a site to be
determined at a later date.
“While some playoff teams will be delayed a week, it’s critical we
complete the first playoff round before moving into the next round,”
said Saco.
“This ensures no team gains an unfair advantage by having an
extra week to prepare for its game.
This approach may be inconvenient
but it is the fairest way to proceed.”

Visiting Sonora Roughed Up By
Oakdale In VOL Finale
By JAGADA CHAMBERS
With the pompous entrance of the
Sonora High football team, it might
have been hard to figure out who had
won 15 consecutive Valley Oak League
games, but that long ride home for
the Wildcats after a 21-14 loss to
Oakdale was a crisp reminder as to
who has been holding court in VOL
football.
The Mustangs used an inspired effort
from senior Nicky Batteate to pull
past Sonora for Oakdale's 16th
consecutive VOL win.
"Everyone knew coming into this game
that Sonora was going to be ready to
play," Batteate said. "Every year,
regardless of our records, Sonora is
going to give us a good game.
"This was their last game, we knew
they were going to play with all
they had."
Sonora did just that, walking into
the locker room at halftime tied at
14-14 with the Mustangs and in
perfect position to do the
unthinkable in the two squad's 91st
meeting, this one at the Corral on
Friday, Nov. 14.
Oakdale came into the contest
knowing that nothing could prevent
its opportunity of hosting a first
round playoff game and holding at
least a portion of the VOL
championship, but Sonora did stand
in the way of the Mustangs sixth
undefeated VOL title in the last 10
years.
Oakdale found itself scrambling to
cease Sonora's success with a
designed screen play that caused
Oakdale fits each of the first three
time the Wildcats turned to the play
in the game's first three quarters.
With the game still in the balance,
the Oakdale defense elevated to the
challenge and responded with one of
their best performances of the 2008
season.
"I was completely confident in our
defense," Oakdale linebacker Charlie
Gilstrap said. "We've been working
real hard all week; focusing on the
next play being the biggest play,
remaining tough, playing through the
whistle.
"Basically, just taking care of
business."
Each time Sonora seemingly was
prepared to exit the Corral with an
important victory, a member of the
defense gave the Mustangs a
much-needed boost.
Defensive back Daniel Gazdik
continued to make his impact on the
season, breaking up a couple of pass
plays as well as recovering a huge
fumble.
The defensive unit also saw a huge
play to close out the first half,
when sophomore A.C. Brown picked off
a Sonora pass in the end zone to
preserve a one touchdown lead for
the host Mustangs.
Oakdale's offensive unit did all
that they needed to do in the
contest, putting together positive
drives in almost all of their second
half touches. Isaiah Mendez-Borba
broke loose for a huge second half
touchdown, providing Oakdale with
all of the cushion the defense would
need.
"Our defense is awesome," Mustang
starting quarterback Tanner Combs
said. "They have been awesome all
year. We know on offense that if we
make a mistake that our defense is
right there and they have our back.
"It's a lot of fun to play offense
with them protecting you."
Now the Mustangs will re-channel all
of their focus to making it
consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section
Division IV Football championships.
Oakdale will open play Nov. 21 at
7:30 p.m. when the Colfax Falcons
come to the Corral for first round
action.
The Mustangs have shown glimpses of
greatness on both sides of the ball
at different times over the final
four weeks of the league campaign,
yet this portion of the season does
not come with room for "next week'
adjustments.
The journey is down to three weeks,
three games against three teams.
"We just have to keep it up," Gazdik
said of the squad's hoped-for three
week run, ending at UOP, "and
continue to do what we do."
