Decade of Dominance

Jake Fischer has never seen the Bell Trophy with anything other than a coat of red paint and that's just the way the Calaveras High senior likes it.

“Just thinking about (the bell) being painted purple gets us all fired up,” Fischer said.

Fischer and the rest of the Calaveras High football team can rest easy for at least another year knowing the Bell Trophy is staying in San Andreas following a 17-0 victory for the Redskins over rival Bret Harte in the 83rd playing of the Calaveras County Big Game Friday at Frank Meyer Field.

“It was a little sad going into the game knowing it was going to be my last game on our home field, but beating Bret Harte and keeping the bell made it feel better,” Fischer said.

Big Game time

The Bret Harte High football team is playing for a happy ending in tonight’s 83rd Calaveras County Big Game.

Bret Harte hasn’t won the Big Game since a memorable upset in 1999, losing nine straight games to Calaveras, which ties the record for the longest streak in the history of the storied rivalry.

The Bullfrogs want to end that streak and also bring a positive end to a season that has seen high hopes decimated by an uncommon number of injuries, including season-enders to seniors Jeff Dougherty and Jacob Willis and junior Conrad Epps.

“We’ve had a lot of ups and downs with injuries, but this week has been pretty intense,” Bret Harte senior Jonny Lora said. “It would make our season to beat Calaveras. They are always on our minds.”

Calaveras locked up a playoff spot last week and can still earn a share of the Mother Lode League championship with a win tonight and Summerville loss against Linden.

For the Redskins, tonight’s game is all about protecting the Bell Trophy.

“We want to keep that tradition going,” CHS senior Devyn VanLier said.

The league championship is at stake in tonight’s junior varsity game, which kicks off at 5:30. Bret Harte’s “Cardiac Kids” are 4-0 in MLL play, including three straight wins in the final minute. The JV Bullfrogs can win the outright MLL title with a win, while Calaveras (3-1 MLL) needs a win to earn a share of the crown.

FOOTBALL: Bruins take on Calaveras in San Andreas

Thursday, September 17, 2009

By Brian Hamilton
Sports Editor

Last week, it was an aerial assault.

This week, it will be the ground game.

Bear River's defense saw quite a shift in game-planning this week, considering the drastically different offensive schemes they will have faced in weeks one and two.

Capital Christian, which beat the Bruins 29-14 last Friday, came into the season opener as with a high-flying passing game.

The good news is that the Bruin defense kept CC quarterback James Lee under wraps through the air (11-of-25 passing for 114 yards and a touchdown), but the bad news was the Cougars found plenty of room to run. Led by Keith Johnson's 164 yards, CC totaled 273 on the ground.

And now, as they arrive in San Andreas, the Bruins will face a “run-first” Fly offense with a Calaveras Redskins team that ran for 378 yards in a week-one, 38-14 win over Weston Ranch.

“They didn't have to throw at all,” said Bear River co-head coach Terry Logue. “Their first touchdown was on a pass, but they didn't need to throw at all.

“They run the Fly offense like Granite Bay and Vanden, with a lot of different formations. And their back (Monti Wilson) is the real deal. He's fast and he cuts well on the turf. And everything is a lot faster on that turf.”

Wilson ran for 228 yards and three touchdowns in the opener, but 10 different Redskin backs carried the ball on the night.

“(Wilson) has tremendous speed and (Jake Fischer) is a big, strong fullback. And they'll throw enough to keep you honest,” Logue said. “Last year (a 28-7 win at Bear River) we just did a good job defensively on them. We'll have to have another great effort to pull off a win down there (tonight).”

Logue liked the effort he saw with his pass defense last week, despite starting two “rookies” in the secondary. He especially praised the play of junior Joey Reina in his varsity debut.

“Our pass coverage was pretty solid, really,” Logue said. “We went into the game wanting to stop the passing atack, but they beat us running the ball with, basically, one play ... a trap.

“Their back (Johnson) did a good job of finding daylight and running.”

Bear River will counter with its own ground game, which was led by senior Cole White (122 yards and a touchdown) and Johnny Jewett (51 yards) in week one.

Sophomore quarterback James Harris had a strong debut under center for the Bruins in last week's loss, completing 9-of-16 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. Two of his four interceptions came in the first half, when he struggled with 0-for-4 passing. But after the break, Harris completed 9-of-12 passes.

Calaveras' Chris Ussery returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a TD, but Hilmar answered with an 11-yard TD run from Diaz and a 16-yard TD catch from his brother Isaac Diaz for a 14-6 lead.

Calaveras tied it at 14 when Monti Wilson scored on a 5-yard run and then caught the two-point conversion pass from Garrett Bach. Hilmar's Quinton McCown was 11 of 21 for 114 yards, while Wilson had 23 carries for 127 yards and a TD.

Varsity Photos of the 83rd Playing of the Big Game

San Andreas, CA...This year the battle for the Bell was in San Andreas. The 83rd playing of the Big Game was closer than the score showed. The Frogs were able to move the ball without the benefit of a quarterback through lots of run plays and some jump passes. What really helped the Redskins scalp the Frogs was turnovers. Bret Harte had several drives on the move and were down in the red zone and the ball ended up in Redskin hands. Click below for action shots by Jeff Rasmussen. We also have our webcast replay of the game in a previous post...
